Epic Games’ CEO Tim Sweeney spoke at the Unreal Fest in Seattle today, stating that despite the uncertainty surrounding the metaverse, the continued phenomenal growth of Fortnite and the underwhelming performance of several high-profile, big-budget games demonstrate that it’s the future of gaming.
Fortnight achieved new records in concurrency, with an all-time peak of 110 million active users during the recent holiday season, a feat Sweeney attributed to a “generational shift” in the gaming industry. “One of the signs of this change is the release of several games with massive budgets, which are failing to meet expectations,” Sweeney said. “Meanwhile, other games are flying high. What’s clear is that players are increasingly drawn to the biggest games where they can play with a larger group of friends.”
